Guiding Parents on Practice Tips for Young Musicians

A parent of a beginner bass student recently asked me for advice on how to optimize their child’s practice routine — specifically, what duration and approach would be most effective. It’s an important question because building strong habits early on sets the foundation for future success. I highlighted three key areas for their child to focus on: tempo, rhythm accuracy, and note accuracy.

For tempo, I recommended introducing the metronome right away and encouraged them to use it during almost every practice session. Developing a consistent sense of pulse is a game changer, even for beginners. For rhythm accuracy, I suggested a step-by-step process: clapping or vocalizing the rhythm, air bowing it, then plucking, and finally playing with the bow. Lastly, while note accuracy is something many beginners naturally tend to focus on, I encouraged prioritizing tempo and rhythm as these can be more challenging early on. By concentrating on these three areas, their child can build a solid foundation that will serve them well as they continue to grow as a musician.
